About Labour
The Labour Party has been working from the beginning of the century to put the values of democratic socialism into practice by taking power in Parliament and in local government.
The Labour representation committee was established in 1900, bringing the trade unions and socialist societies into an alliance to get members elected to Parliament. By 1906 the Labour Party itself was formed and in 1918 its constitution and principles were agreed at a major conference which established individual membership.
Advances in the quality of people's lives made by Labour governments are many - the establishment of the welfare state, the National Health Service, comprehensive education, laws against sex and race discrimination - but there's still a long way to go. Your support helps Labour to become a strong organisation that can win the power it needs to implement its policies.
In the last few years alone our achievements have been numerous. We have the minimum wage, the longest period of sustained low inflation, record levels of numeracy and literacy and more police officers on our streets than ever before.
