I’d like to thank you for taking the time to visit our website and blog.
As many of you will all know, the Labour Party is undergoing a period of change and is being steered in a new direction by a new leader. It is a time for us to change and adapt and meet the new challenges that lay ahead. When the nation needed it Labour met those challenges and created a lasting legacy for Britain. After world war two we came about in a stunning electoral win and introduced the National Health Service, Council Housing and the Welfare State.
But while these remain ongoing challenges and worthy of our attention, there are new ones to face, such as the growing demands on housing posed by a growing populace. We know that the only solution to this problem is to build more houses and this is why Labour has made a commitment to building many million more homes by 2020. We realise that education is, to quote Gordon Brown a “liberating force” and this is why we will continue to strive to provide better schooling and education for our children. And to make it so more and more young people can go on to a university education. Things have improved, but still only 4 out of 10 people going to university are from low income backgrounds and this is unacceptable.
Then there is the ongoing issue of global warming and recycling. The council in Yeovil has taken great strides and made great efforts in stepping up recycling. But it isn’t enough. The status quo is no longer good enough. This requires dramatic and immediate action and it is only through working together and through cooperation that we can make a difference.
We here at Yeovil Labour realise that lasting and constructive change can only really come about through the consensus, agreement and dedication of our grassroots members and of local people of the constituency. This is once more a time of party renewal and we are striving to adapt and to meet the challenges and demands of the 21st century.
We have our own ideas for Yeovil which we made clear at the last election. We want to re-engage the County Council on the town road system to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow. We want take the recycling initiative a step further by introducing more pick up points for recycled plastic and cardboard.
This is the age of big ideas and we want to hear what you think. We want to know what you think needs to happen to make life in Yeovil better for all. So leave us a comment or email me at secretary@labour4yeovil.org.uk.
